Trump, Biden Light Christmas Tree at White House

Vice President Joe Biden lit the Christmas tree on Monday, calling it one of “America’s greatest gifts.” President Donald Trump, in contrast, wore a Red Sox jersey as he was reminded of the rivalry by one of his daughters.

Ceremonies at the White House started on Monday with a performance from a gospel group. Before Mr. Biden spoke, a 21-gun salute kicked off the lighting.

The five-story tree, which is 15 feet tall, is located in a grove alongside Pennsylvania Avenue, the route taken by members of the military on tours. The forest has had a 100-year history of illumination and controversy — in 1927, it was the target of Communist sympathizers — but Mrs. Trump likes it. “I love the White House Christmas tree,” she told reporters in March. “It’s so festive.”

Mr. Biden praised the members of the armed forces for “helping our country celebrate the birth of Christ,” a different message than what he offered before the tree went up.

“We are indebted to you, and we thank you for all you do every day,” he said.

The vice president’s remarks were delayed by a snowstorm that hit Washington last week.
