Singapore Airlines is trying to recruit volunteers to become the airline’s first fully vaccinated crew.

Non-medical flying crew currently obtain a government medical exemption and all their co-workers must have not have any contagious conditions.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) hopes to hit the target of 20,000 by 30 December, when a new rule comes into effect.

If the first-ever fully vaccinated crew member cannot be found, the airline will use the exemption threshold of 20,000 fully vaccinated crew to fill the gap.

The exercise comes as Singapore’s health authority recently put out guidelines on hygiene, including mandating the wearing of gloves on flights.

The first batch of volunteers will be required to apply by the end of September.

It has also handed out flyers to board members of the public ahead of monthly influenza vaccination clinics to be held at select airports across the country.

Additionally, it said it was scaling up the virus surveillance programme and increasing the number of winter testing centres.

Singapore estimates it will vaccinate around 35,000 people against the flu this winter.
