Police in Canada say man fired at them with gun while on vacation

A person who allegedly fired a gun at Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers in British Columbia on Wednesday has been arrested. The suspect was held until a Tuesday night traffic stop in Langley, a Vancouver suburb, when he was handed over to police. The person had arrived in Vancouver on the weekend and was reportedly going back to his home province of Alberta after the confrontation, reported The Province.

Police had been monitoring the person on Wednesday night, but said that when they tried to stop the suspect they were met with gunfire. Although police have not confirmed whether the man with the gun was targeted, they did say they are treating the incident as an attempted murder. The police have not yet released the man’s name.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are on high alert after a string of high-profile fatal incidents involving the force, including the November shooting of Const. Mike Chernyk, who was hit by an officer’s own firearm. The officer that fired the shot has not been identified. The most recent shooting that has occurred came on Wednesday morning, when Sgt. Vince Lajoie was injured and had to be taken to hospital. The injured officer has since been released from the hospital. The worst attacks on the RCMP have occurred in British Columbia’s Kamloops region.

On Wednesday night, there were community vigils in the area, held in honour of the fatal shooting of Const. Mike Chernyk.
