Florida police shoot student armed with semi-automatic gun

After car breaks down in Tampa, Delany Rebert ran inside the vehicle and shot an officer in the leg. He was then shot by more officers

Florida police shot and killed an armed student who lunged at officers as he attempted to flee an officer-involved shooting, authorities said.

The University of South Florida reported that a former student, Delany Rebert, 22, was pronounced dead on Thursday at a Tampa hospital. A dispatcher told the Tampa Tribune that Rebert had been shot and died of his injuries.

“From our understanding, the student that was shot was the one that lunged at the police officer,” University of South Florida police chief John Rooney said.

The shooting occurred when officers attempted to pull over a car on the USF campus.

Police discovered that Rebert had been driving on campus when he broke down. While an officer checked the driver’s information, Rebert exited the vehicle, took out a semi-automatic handgun and attempted to flee.

When an officer tried to detain Rebert, he repeatedly lunged at the officer with the gun, according to an account by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office.

“The report specifically talks about the fact that the suspect pointed the gun at an officer,” Rooney said.

Three other officers then shot at Rebert. All three officers were wearing body cameras, which captured parts of the shooting.

Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said that Rebert shot an officer in the leg before being shot himself.

“The student was shot by officer-involved deputies,” Rooney said. “The suspect had already shot the one deputy at least once in the leg.”

Rebert entered USF’s law school in 2016, according to the Tampa Tribune. A statement released by the school said Rebert was suspended for three months in September 2016 for conduct violations. In the statement, the school noted that Rebert was “deemed no longer a threat to the health, safety and welfare of the USF community”.

The school said Rebert had successfully completed his terms.
